Student Placements

Affiliations and partnerships with a number of academic institutions provide opportunities for professional staff at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) to share their knowledge by teaching students within formalized student placement positions. Our trained staff also develop their own mentorship and teaching skills by assisting placement students to achieve hands-on experience in their respective fields. All students are partnered with knowledgeable staff who provide mentorship, preceptorship, and supervision.

Students are crucial to the development of our academic mandate, and the strengthening of our partnerships with academic institutions. Students are valued by our staff, who enjoy mentoring them in the professions for which they share a deep passion. During their time at Ontario Shores, students gain practical experience related to their field of study, and staff benefit from a fresh perspective on their own practices.

We assist with supervision and teaching in the following fields:

  • Nursing
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Recreational Therapy
  • Pharmacy
  • Dentistry

My favorite part of the day is the time I spend with patients; this is where the bulk of my learning occurs. Each individual is so diverse and unique that listening to their personal stories enhances my appreciation for the complexity of mental health as well as for the strength of the human spirit. The best way to learn is to walk a mile in another man's shoes, but to do that I must first remove my own.
    ~ Erica Martin,
    Psychology Intern, FPRU and NRS

The Ontario Shores student placement program offered me a personal look at the connection between mental health and the justice system. I was thrilled to witness the collaborative efforts of so many people from so many professional backgrounds all working together to do what they can for people suffering from mental illness. During my semester with Ontario Shores I filtered through the Forensic program, beginning in assessment to spending my last day in outpatient services which enabled me to gather perspective of each stage of a patient’s recovery process. I’m confident that what I learned at Ontario Shores will be the reason I continue to pursue mental health law.
