Central Recreation

Recreation facilities are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and weekends from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The gymnasium is equipped for basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton and other activities. There is also a weight room equipped with a universal machine, free weights, step climbers, elliptical machines, treadmills and exercise bicycles. The pool is usually available between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

A games room is also available in Central Recreation, which includes a bowling alley, billiard tables, table tennis, foosball tables, a piano and a games area.

Families and/or caregivers, 18 years of age or older, can access the recreation facilities with their loved ones. Family members will have to sign a general release and successfully complete a ParQ health form. They will also be given an orientation on their first visit and will be required to sign in and out of the gym/conditioning room. Complete packages for family members are available at the Central Recreation Office as well as copies on each unit.

Outdoor Central Recreation Area

Outdoor Recreation facilities are available to support patient recovery and integration with the community. They provide opportunities for patients to participate in outdoor recovery-based activities in an accessible space.

Located on the east side of hospital grounds, south of the Gordon Street entrance, the fully accessible area includes a Victorian Gazebo, half multi-use court for basketball, walking labyrinth (maze) for inspiration or meditation and a connecting paved pathway from the Waterfront Trail to Building 1.

Open to the public, this area is included in the security ground patrols, and supervised by staff members during scheduled patient activities.

Sports equipment for the half-court is available for sign out by patients and staff through Central Recreation. While the court is also open for staff and public use, patient structured activities during scheduled times are given first priority. Patient activities can be scheduled Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Walking Labyrinth
By blending visual symbolism with the process of walking, this labyrinth creates a walking meditation that can be used to enhance awareness, reduce stress, quiet the mind and open the heart. Walking a labyrinth has proved helpful for patients with mental health issues as well as providing meditative benefits for all.

Multi-Use Half Court
This basketball half-court features a regulation height basketball net. The special flex court tiles allow for better shock absorbency and footing and provide better drainage to minimize standing water on the court.

Victorian Gazebo
This Victorian-style gazebo features amazing ornate details such as spindled rails, a two tier pagoda, decorative corner braces and other design details. The Gazebo provides a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the waterfront view.

Computer Room

Young man at a computerPatients are welcome to use the computers, but must have signed consent before logging on.  For specific information, computer room hours and access, patients should speak to a member of their treatment team.




Finances

Patients may deposit and withdraw their money from the Cashier/Patient Accounts Office at Ontario Shores, which is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Business Office is closed weekends and statutory holidays. There is an ATM available in the Main Lobby of the hospital where patients may also withdraw funds.

Food Services

CafeteriaPatients are served three meals per day plus snacks, which are provided on the unit. Special diet options are available. Patients who have ground privileges can purchase meals from one of two cafeterias located in the hospital.

Main Street Café offers a quick service grill, with fresh brewed coffee, a variety of soft drinks, fresh baked pastries, soup and grab ‘n’ go sandwiches and snacks.

Lakeview Marketplace offers a made-to-order deli sandwich bar, made to order grill, home-style comfort foods, self-serve salad bar, self-serve soups and bagels, grab ‘n’ go sandwiches and salads, fresh baked pastries and two coffee options; self-serve Mother Parkers or made-to-order Far Coast Coffee.

Gift Shop

The Ontario Shores Gift Shop is operated by Volunteer Services, and patients can purchase items such as gifts, cards, stamps, personal care items and snacks.

The Gift Shop also provides vocational training and work placements for patients at Ontario Shores. Details and Hours of Operation.

Good Luck Clothing Shop

The Good Luck Clothing Shop is run by staff and patients in partnership with Vocational Services. This unique partnership provides opportunities for vocational skill development during recovery.

The Good Luck Clothing Shop is open:

Monday 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Tuesday 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Friday: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Clothing items in the shop are 25 cents a piece with a limit of three pieces of clothing.

Patient volunteers are always available and eager to provide assistance to patients if required. If patients require clothing when the shop is closed they may contact Volunteer Services for service.

Information Desk

The Information Desk is located in the Main Lobby at Ontario Shores. It is staffed Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Local newspapers and bus schedules are available free of charge at the Information Desk.

Laundry

A washing machine and clothes dryer are available on each patient unit and assistance can be provided if needed. If patients are unable to do their own laundry, a member of their treatment will make other arrangements.

Library

LibraryThe Library is a quiet place at Ontario Shores where patients can read or borrow books, magazines and tapes. A librarian is usually available Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.




Mail

Personal mail is delivered to patients on their unit.  Patients can give their outgoing mail to a member of their treatment team. Stamps are available at the Gift Shop and letter writing assistance is available upon request.

Parking

Ontario Shores has limited parking and if patients have a car, they must park in the designated patient parking area. Patients may leave their keys and driver’s licence in the Business Office for safe keeping. The Business Office also offers patient parking passes at a reduced rate. The patient’s doctor will advise whether or not he/she should drive while receiving treatment at Ontario Shores.

Public Transportation

Durham Region Transit stops at the main entrances to Ontario Shores frequently throughout the week and on weekends. Bus schedules are available at the Information Desk.

Spiritual Care

ChapelThere is a chapel located at Ontario Shores. Multi-faith services are offered and sacraments are served by a variety of faith groups. The chapel is also open for private worship. Patients may also reach an Ontario Shores Chaplain by completing a Pastoral Care Request Form or they may contact their own priest, rabbi or minister. Read more on Spiritual Care.



Interpretation Services

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) is pleased to provide Interpreter Services to support and recognize our diverse community of patients.

We have proudly partnered with Multilingual Community Interpreter Services (MCIS) to provide access to certified language interpreters who converse in 300 languages.

Telephones

There is a patient telephone on each unit or patients can use a pay telephone, which are located throughout the hospital. Long distance calling cards are available for purchase at Main Street Café.

Wave Lengths Hair Salon

The hair salon at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences provides inpatients with a variety of haircut and style services. The hairdresser is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and will visit the units upon request. Outpatients of Ontario Shores are welcome to visit the hairdresser for basic hairstyling needs, Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
