Accessing Care for Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are a group of serious conditions where you feel so preoccupied with food and weight that you may lose focus on everything else. Eating disorders are not about food, but are a way of coping with deeper problems that you find too painful or difficult to deal with directly.

There are three main types of eating disorders:

Anorexia nervosa: An eating disorder characterized by refusal to maintain a healthy body weight and an obsessive fear of gaining weight.

Bulimia nervosa:  An eating disorder characterized by restraining of food intake for a period of time followed by an over intake or binging period that results in feelings of guilt and low self-esteem.

Binge-eating disorder: An eating disorder characterized by compulsive overeating in which people consume huge amounts of food while feeling out of control and powerless to stop.

We are here to help

Ontario Shores offers an inpatient Eating Disorders Unit (EDU)  and an Adolescent Eating Disorder Day Treatment service dedicated to the care and recovery of adolescents with eating disorders. Adolescents coming to the EDU have typically already tried multiple treatment programs and require additional support to work towards their recovery goals.

Know that there is hope and recovery is possible.

You may be eligible for the program if:

  • you are between 12 and 17 years old and your referral is submitted at least four months prior to your 18th birthday and
  • inpatient care at Ontario Shores is likely to benefit you the most and help you reach recovery.

How to access care

What to expect after a referral

Once your referral has been accepted you will be notified by the intake coordinator. Wait times for admission to the program vary depending on the number of individuals awaiting admission. More information may be available at the time of acceptance, but it is important to note that an exact wait time may not be available for Ontario Shores to communicate at that time. It is important to continue to follow up with your healthcare team and follow any recommended care guidelines while you wait. If you experience any medical emergency or are in crisis, emergency or acute care services should be contacted. See crisis options
