Metabolism

Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. It’s a complex biochemical process in which the fuel (or calories) in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to do everything from moving to thinking and growing.

Even when you're resting, your body needs energy for all its basic functions, including breathing, circulating blood, and adjusting hormone levels. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these “hidden” functions is known as your basal metabolic rate (BMR) – which is often referred to as your metabolism.
