Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) will turn 100 years old on Wednesday, October 23 and we are celebrating with a host of planned activities.

Over the last 12 months Ontario Shores has been in celebration mode thanks to the efforts of our Ambassadors of Hope, six individuals with a connection to mental health and our organization who have been attending events, conducting interviews and producing videos in recognition of this historical milestone.

Along the way we welcomed our 100th anniversary sign in the Main Lobby (Building 5, Level 2), participated in a mental health exhibition at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa and published a commemorative book, which will be available for purchase for $20. We also welcomed staff, families, patients, volunteers and the community to our Century of Care Fair, held last month on the grounds of Ontario Shores.

Despite all of this, we are not slowing down on October 23, the day we officially hit the century mark.

The schedule, which is available below, includes the unveiling of a new patient-centred space, access to a video booth, our Juried Art Show Reception as well cake, and plenty of it.

Included in the day is a series of #MindVine podcasts featuring special guests. In addition to President and CEO Karim Mamdani and Ambassador of Hope Lori Lane-Murphy kicking off the live filming of the podcasts, we are proud to welcome former hockey executive and current Sportsnet broadcaster Brian Burke.

Burke has had an extensive career in hockey holding key leadership positions with the National Hockey League as well as the Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames. He now appears frequently on Sportsnet hockey broadcasts.

Away from the rink, Burke is a strong supporter of inclusion in sports and creating conversations about mental health issues. He will be available for a meet and greet at 11:45 a.m. before filming the podcast at 12:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

In the afternoon, Prince Edward Island raised singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alli Walker will join the podcast. Walker is quickly garnering the attention of the country music industry with her unique style of music she coins 'Mindful Music' and 'Conscious Country' - authentic and vulnerable storytelling based on mental health subjects, empowering messages, life’s hard lessons, and the tough questions we ask ourselves.

Following a day of cake, refreshments and conversations about mental health and Ontario Shores, the night wraps with our Juried Art Show Reception and Awards at 5:00 p.m.

The Juried Art Show features pieces of art reflective of the emotions and impact associated with mental illness and the long-standing history of Ontario Shores.  The pieces are currently on display in our Art Gallery.  Along with celebrating the inspiring works of local artists, the night will feature light refreshments and special guests.

This is an exciting time at Ontario Shores, not only for staff, patients and volunteers, but also our community. Join us as we celebrate our past and look forward to future advancing mental health in community.
