Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) recently accepted an Ovation Award of Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators – Toronto.

The hospital’s Communications and Public Affairs team received the award for its program Creative Minds: Raising Awareness and Reducing Stigma through the Arts.

The Creative Minds program promotes mental health awareness, and includes art shows hosted by the Ontario Shores Art Gallery, a Mindful Music charity concert, the Imagine Film Festival and Let’s Talk Speaker Series. Past speakers and special guests included celebrities such as actor Joe Pantoliano, CFL Hall of Famer Terry Evanshen, singer/songwriter Matthew Good and singer/songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk who all shared how mental illness has touched their lives. They also spoke to the harmful effects of stigma and encouraged others to show understanding and compassion to those suffering from mental illness.

“With one in four people experiencing a mental illness, the associated stigma impacts a person’s ability to seek treatment and achieve optimal well-being,” says Susan Nakhle, Director, Communications and Public Affairs.  “We are proud that through the arts, Ontario Shores is able to unite the community, reduce stigma and enhance the quality of life for our patients, and for all individuals with mental illness.”

One component of Creative Minds is Mindful Music, which enters its second year in support of mental health awareness. The event will take place Saturday, July 16 at Ontario Shores. Attendance is free, and includes a variety of bands, kids’ activities and an outdoor movie at dusk. Festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. and the first band will perform at noon.

Ontario Shores also received an Ovation Award of Merit for What’s up Doc?: Marketing for Mental Health, a direct mail marketing campaign developed to promote the hospital’s programs, services and referral process as well as to foster relationships with medical practitioners within its service area.
