Yvonne's Story

'I know I have someone that will listen'

YvonneYvonne values the treatment and support she has received through the Shoppers LOVE. YOU. Women’s Clinic at Ontario Shores.

She also values the relationships she has built with those providing care.

“I know I have someone that will listen,” says Yvonne of the staff at the Women’s Clinic. “Knowing that has been a security blanket for me.”

Her struggle with anxiety and depression began as a teenager and continued through to adulthood. There were some dark times.

“I would wake up in the morning and feel anxious and then by afternoon I would be depressed,” she says. “That was kind of my life.”

Yvonne’s road to recovery had many peaks and valleys leading up to her referral to the Women’s Clinic following the birth of her second daughter, Teagan.

“I wanted to be a good mom and not cry myself to sleep,” recalls Yvonne who operates her own photography and belly casting business.

A combination of medication, treatment and skill-building helped Yvonne regain control of her mental health. She credits Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for giving her a useful tool.

“That was really helpful,” she says. “It gave me a technique to use and it works.”

Managing her mental health is increasingly important for Yvonne, who at age 30 was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis (MS). To give herself the best opportunity to be healthy physically, Yvonne must continually be working on her mental health.

Regression in her mental health could activate symptoms related to her MS diagnosis.

“I understand myself better than I ever have before,” she says.

Along her recovery journey Yvonne has confronted stigma several times. While she admits stigma may have prevented her from receiving help in the past, she is now focused on breaking down barriers rather than adhering to them.

“I didn’t want to be a person that had to go to a mental health facility,” she says. “But it was nothing like what I had pictured in my mind. I feel no shame about it at all.”
