Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Amer Burhan to the role of Physician-in-Chief.
Dr. Burhan joins Ontario Shores from St. Joseph’s Health Care-London where he holds the roles of Clinical Lead for Therapeutic Brain Stimulation Service, and from Western University where he holds several senior leadership roles.
“The Board is pleased to welcome Dr. Burhan to Ontario Shores,” says Ted Moroz, Chair, Board of Directors. “We were thoroughly impressed with the breadth and depth of both his clinical and academic experience and are confident he will have an immediate impact at Ontario Shores.”
In addition to his hospital experience at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Royal Ottawa Healthcare Group and Stanton Regional Hospital in Yellowknife, Dr. Burhan held a number of academic positions at Western University, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the University of Toronto over the years.
“Ontario Shores is a progressive and innovative hospital. I am excited to join an organization where I can leverage my passion for research and education to bring meaningful change to the way mental health care services are provided. I look forward to working alongside the interprofessional care teams, leaders and staff to enhance the recovery experience for patients and their loved ones,” says Dr. Burhan.
With a primary focus in the area of late-life cognitive neuropsychiatric disorders and in non-invasive brain stimulation, Dr. Burhan is a sought after speaker, researcher and educator in his area of specialty.
“Dr. Burhan is an exemplary clinician and distinguished researcher,” says Karim Mamdani, President and CEO, Ontario Shores. “We have an ambitious research agenda as there is still so much we don’t know about mental illness. I am excited to see how Dr. Burhan’s passion for applied research can lead to new ways in which care is delivered.”
Dr. Burhan graduated with his medical degree from Baghdad University. He completed a fellowship in Neurosciences at the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University in Montreal, his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York and then went on to obtain advanced training in geriatric neuropsychiatry at Schulich School of Medicine/Western University.
Ontario Shores looks forward to welcoming Dr. Burhan when he starts this role in early October.
