Orientation for New Hires

General Orientation

Day 1 - Begins at 8:00 a.m.

Location: Main Entrance (Building 5 - green entrance), The Conference Place

Topics covered:

  • Introduction/Welcome from the Centre of Education and Organizational Development 
  • Welcome from a Senior Management Team member 
  • Ontario Shores tour – please wear comfortable shoes
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • OPSEU Presentation (union employees only)
  • Introduction to Benefits for full-time non-union/management employees
  • Mandatory education online modules – you are welcome to bring your own headphones

 

Safe Management Group (SMG) Training

Day 2 and 3 - Begins at 8:30 a.m.

Location: Main Entrance (Building 5 - green entrance), The Conference Place

The goal of Safety Management Group (SMG) Training Program is the early recognition and prevention of violent/aggressive behaviours through crisis prevention and crisis management.

Every new employee attends some form of SMG training, depending on how much patient contact they have. 

Various topics covered include:

Crisis Prevention:

  • Risk Management
  • Relationship Management
  • Behaviour Profiling

Crisis Management:

  • Managing aggression
  • Physical Intervention Concepts/Techniques

 

On-Unit Preceptorship Program

Day 4

Location: On Unit

On-unit preceptorship is currently for inpatient nursing staff only at Ontario Shores. The Nursing Preceptorship Program involves having an experienced nurse partner with a newly hired nurse with the intent of socializing the newly hired nurses to the unit, while assisting them in acquiring specialized nursing competencies required for safe, ethical and quality practice within their specified clinical setting.
 

Clinical Orientation

Day 5 – Day 6

Location: Main Entrance (Building 5 - green entrance), The Conference Place

  • Attendees include all clinical employees (anyone who has direct patient contact)
  • Each day will begin at 8:30 a.m. in The Conference Place
  • New employees are invited to purchase lunch from the Main Street Café or use this time as they wish  
  • Two breaks are scheduled for each day of clinical orientation

Day 7 and 8

Location: Corporate Training Room - Building 7 Level 1

  • Psychopharmacology
  • Meditech order entry, medication entry (Nursing)

  • CWS training (Outpatients only)
  • Discipline specific training (Allied health and outpatients)
