The Psychiatric Patient Advocate Office (PPAO)

The Psychiatric Patient Advocate Office (PPAO) was created in 1983 in an effort to protect the legal and civil rights of patients receiving care in specialized mental health hospitals. At Ontario Shores, patient advocates and rights advisors are available to all patients. This office addresses any hospital-based or system issues that impact a patient’s rights including legal, therapeutic and social service issues. The PPAO at Ontario Shores functions independently of the hospital, but works collaboratively with hospital staff to provide confidential advocacy and rights advice. The PPAO also encourages patients to be active in all decisions that affect their treatment and care. For more information, please visit www.ppao.gov.on.ca.
