Research Ethics Board

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences Research Ethics Board (REB) oversees all research conducted by staff at Ontario Shores and our research partners.  The REB approves all research studies, ensures high scientific and ethical merit and monitors current research studies. 
The REB is guided by the fundamental basic value of "Respect for Human Dignity". Respect for human dignity is expressed through the following three core ethical principles which are reflected in the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS-2, 2014):
  • Respect for Persons
  • Concern for Welfare
  • Justice

Research Ethics Board Seeking Community Member (Volunteer)

The Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences Research Ethics Board (OSREB) is seeking applications for a community member to join the Board.

This volunteer position is open to all residents of Durham Region.

The OSREB oversees all research conducted by staff and our research partners at Ontario Shores and is responsible for reviewing research applications involving human participants, and providing an independent and impartial assessment of research projects. A community member is essential to help broaden the perspective of the REB beyond the institution.

As a Board member you will review potential research projects and discuss them in-depth with fellow Board members. Lived experience of mental illness is not required but considered an asset for this position.


  • a community member is expected to attend one 2-3 hour meeting per month and review files in preparation for each meeting. The time commitment is approximately 7 hours per month.


  • no previous experience necessary
  • community members are volunteers who have no affiliation with Ontario Shores
  • community members should not be involved in research or legal work as an occupation
  • community members should not have formal training in research
  • certificate of completion from the free online tutorial - Tri-Council Policy Statement 2: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Human Subjects required to be submitted prior to start date
