The Concurrent Disorders Service provides assessment, consultation, individual counselling and group therapy to both inpatients and registered outpatients of Ontario Shores with substance related issues. Patients will have been diagnosed with a moderate to serious, persistent mental health concern and evidence of a co-occurring substance issue with the cognitive capacity to benefit from this specialized program.
Recovery based interventions are developed and implemented in collaboration with the patient by Concurrent Disorder Counsellors, health care professionals specifically trained in mental health and substance use and dependence. All therapeutic interventions operate within a harm reduction approach and trauma informed care perspective. Treatment approaches to achieve personal goals are evidence-based practices for concurrent disorders and include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy strategies, structured relapse prevention, and brief therapy. Therapeutic interventions are provided according to the stage of change in which the patient identifies.
Service Hours:
Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with potential for evening and weekend programs.

- Assessment using standardized tools.
- Group and individual sessions guided by the Stages of Change model and Health Canada Best Practices for the treatment of Concurrent Disorders will offer:
- Engagement and Support
- Psychoeducation
- Development of Coping Skills and Strategies
- Goal planning
- Relapse Prevention
- Referral to community agencies
- Family education
Inclusion Criteria
Referral Process:
Registered inpatients and outpatients receiving ongoing treatment intervention and follow up at Ontario Shores. Service available to patients ranging in age from adolescent to older adult with a moderate to severe mental health condition and co-occurring substance use or dependence. Cognitive capacity to effectively participate in the initial screening process is required. The Concurrent Disorders Service is unable to accept referrals from external sources at this time.
Exclusion Criteria
Referrals for all registered inpatients and outpatients of Ontario Shores, receiving ongoing treatment, can be made by a member of the interprofessional treatment team through Meditech using the Concurrent Disorders Services referral.
