Ontario Shores Launches its First Family Council

April 17, 2010

When Pat Hofsepian heard Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) was creating a Family Council, she knew right away she wanted to be a part of it.

Hofsepian’s son was an inpatient at Ontario Shores so she has first-hand experience of the important role families have in a patient’s journey to recovery. “Through my experience I have learned many families need education, support and help. The new Family Council will be able to guide and facilitate that,” says Hofsepian.

The Family Council will create opportunities for involvement and engage families to take an active role in advancing care and service delivery for a positive patient and family experience. The Council will develop and support information needs and learning for families and advocate for greater awareness of mental health needs.

The Family Council is open to everyone in the community who have been affected by mental illness as well as family members, relatives, friends or significant others of current or former inpatients and outpatients of Ontario Shores.

“Families are an important part of our patients’ journey to recovery,” says Glenna Raymond, President and CEO. “The Council strengthens the role of families in the treatment plan and provides much needed support and hope to patients and others who are affected by mental illness.”

Family members are a key social support for people with mental illness and the Council will provide additional insight and resources to patients and others affected by mental illness as they navigate the mental health care system.

“We look forward to the Council’s work on developing a peer support network and learning opportunities for families. Their voice and lived experience will also be so valuable as we help shape Ontario’s mental health care system,” says Raymond.
